Working Principle
You put your metal in the refractory clay crucible. Then you stick the whole thing in a furnace – pit furnace, lift-out, tilting, whatever you've got.
Turn up the heat. The clay soaks up the heat and passes it along to the metal inside. Now, silicon carbide transfers heat better – I'll admit that. But clay has thicker walls. That thickness holds heat, so you can even use it for short holding jobs, not just melting.
