Well-type Quenching Furnace

Well-type quenching furnace is a vertical furnace – goes in the ground. The well-type quenching furnace body sits below floor level. You load the parts from the top. Heat them up, then pull them out and drop them in a quench tank fast. Common in machine shops, steel mills, automotive, aerospace, heavy industry. Anywhere you need to harden long parts.

Danyang Dingfeng Industrial Furnace Co., Ltd. is one of the most reliable manufacturers and suppliers of well-type quenching furnace in China. If you're going to wholesale durable well-type quenching furnace made in China, welcome to get pricelist from our factory. All customized products are with high quality and low price.

Working Principle

  • Vertical loading first. You hang the workpieces from a fixture. Overhead crane picks it up, lowers it into the pit. Straight down.
  • Heating and soaking. Seal the lid. The heating elements run up and down the vertical walls. They get the parts to the austenitizing temperature – whatever your steel needs, maybe 850°C for a common alloy steel. A circulation fan sits at the bottom or the top. That fan keeps the temperature even from top to bottom. Without it, the top gets hotter than the bottom. That's a problem for long shafts.
  • Quenching. Soaking done. The lid opens. The crane pulls the parts straight up and moves them into the quench tank. Some tanks sit right above the furnace. Some are next to it. The transfer has to be fast. Every second counts.

Features

  • Vertical heating structure. This is the whole point. Long cylindrical parts hang straight. Gravity keeps them straight. No sagging like you get with horizontal loading.
  • Even temperature. The fan helps. So does the element placement. We put elements all the way up and down the walls. Zones, usually three or four. Thermocouples at different heights.
  • Fast quench transfer. The crane has to move fast. I've timed customers – slow cranes take fifteen seconds from pull to quench. That's too long. Parts cool in air. You lose hardness. A fast setup does it in five to seven seconds.
  • High load capacity. These things handle heavy parts. I've built pits for fifty ton shafts – think power generation rotors. The fixture has to hold that weight, and the crane has to lift it.
  • Precise control. PLC or PID. Same as other furnaces. But with a deep pit, you need more thermocouples. I usually put one every meter. That gives you a profile.
  • Energy efficient. Insulation is fiber or brick. Fiber is better for cycling. Brick is fine for 24/7 operation. The lid seal matters a lot on a pit furnace – hot air wants to rise.
  • Safe operation. Interlocks on the lid – you can't lift the lid while the heating elements are on. Not that you'd want to. Over-temperature alarm, emergency stop. Standard stuff. But one thing people forget: the pit can fill with inert gas if you have an atmosphere system. You need oxygen monitoring.
  • Flexible customization. Depth, diameter, lift system, automation level – all changeable. No two pit furnaces are exactly alike because no two shops have the same parts.

Applications

Machinery manufacturing

Shafts, rods, gears, transmission parts.

Automotive industry

Drive shafts, axles, gears, engine parts.

Aerospace industry

Long alloy structural parts – landing gear components, wing spars, that kind of stuff.

Metallurgical industry

Steel bars and rods. Nothing fancy – just hardening.

Oil and gas industry

Drill rods, pipes, heavy equipment parts.

Customization Capabilities

Dingfeng Industrial Furnace. We change things based on what you need.

Pit depth and diameter. Fully customizable.

  • Lid mechanism. Three types. Lifting lid – goes straight up. Needs ceiling height. Hinged swing lid – swings open like a door. Needs floor space on one side. Or an integrated hoist – the lid has its own lift, independent of the shop crane. That's for when your shop crane is busy with other things.
  • Quenching integration. Two ways. Combined unit – the quench tank sits right above the furnace. The part goes straight up into the tank. Very fast transfer. Or adjacent tank – the crane pulls the part out and swings it sideways. Slower but cheaper.
  • Atmosphere system. Gas injection with flow control. For bright heat treatment – stops oxidation. We use nitrogen or argon. The gas flows into the pit, pushes air out. You need a positive pressure – maybe 5 to 10 millibars. Too much gas wastes money. Too little and you get scale. We put an oxygen sensor in the exhaust.
  • Cooling system. Forced cooling fans if you want to speed up turnaround. Or water jackets built into the well-type quenching furnace shell or lid. Water jackets keep the lid seals cool. Without cooling, the rubber seals cook after a few hundred cycles.
