High Alumina Refractory Bricks

High Alumina Refractory Bricks

High alumina refractory bricks. Al₂O₃ content at least 48%, aluminosilicate family. Main raw material is bauxite. Formed and fired at high temperature. Refractoriness over 1770°C.
These high alumina refractory bricks have good thermal stability, strong slag resistance, and high hot strength. Higher alumina content gives better performance. Three grades based on Al₂O₃ percentage.

Product Definition

High alumina refractory bricks. Al₂O₃ content at least 48%, aluminosilicate family. Main raw material is bauxite. Formed and fired at high temperature. Refractoriness over 1770°C.

These high alumina refractory bricks have good thermal stability, strong slag resistance, and high hot strength. Higher alumina content gives better performance. Three grades based on Al₂O₃ percentage.

The mix uses bauxite and silica sand. Typical ratio: about 70% alumina, 30% silica sand, plus some iron oxide as additive. Fire them at 1500°C to 1600°C, and the cold crushing strength hits above 80 MPa.

Physical and Chemical Properties

High alumina refractory bricks have good hot strength. You measure it by load softening temperature and high temperature creep. Higher Al₂O₃ gives better numbers.

Below 70% Al₂O₃, the load softening temperature depends on how much mullite phase you have versus liquid phase. More mullite means higher load softening temperature. The amount and nature of the liquid phase affects high temperature performance a lot. Reducing impurities in the raw materials raises the load softening temperature and improves creep resistance.

A formula we use often: special grade bauxite clinker 40% to 45%, bauxite powder 45% to 51%, soft clay 7% to 10%, kyanite powder 3% to 5%, and pulp waste liquid 4% to 5%. This mix gives high strength, high bulk density, low firing temperature (1440°C to 1460°C), reasonable cost, and long life.

High-Alumina Furnace Bottom Support Brick

Features

High refractoriness

Better than clay bricks and semi-silica bricks. High alumina bricks run from 1750°C to 1790°C.

High load softening temperature

High Al₂O₃ and low impurities mean less low melting glass phase. Load softening temperature runs from 1420°C to 1550°C. Better than clay bricks, not as good as silica bricks.

Good slag resistance

Nearly neutral. They resist both acid and basic slags. The SiO₂ content gives a little better resistance to acid slag.

Good chemical stability

Resists slag, molten metal, oxidation, and reduction. Higher Al₂O₃ and fewer impurities make everything better.

Applications

High alumina refractory bricks go into all kinds of high temperature furnaces. Blast furnaces, hot blast stoves, electric furnaces, reverberatory furnaces, rotary kilns. Also used for checker bricks, stopper heads, nozzle bricks – anywhere you need good thermal stability and corrosion resistance.
